Artist Statement:

I create flowers using traditional techniques in metalsmithing and fiber arts, to interpret how complex emotional states can affect the physical body. These renderings include jewelry, wearable art, miniature sculpture, and, in some instances, installation. The basis of my artwork is centered on the interpretation of historical flower symbolism, specifically in the popularity of the Victorian language of flowers.

The Victorians saw any public displays of emotion as inappropriate and instead, chose to express themselves through the exchange of floral bouquets. Each flower symbolized a specific emotion or message intended for the recipient, and could be interpreted through the use of a flower dictionary. These flowers were gifted in the form of a single stem, a well arranged bouquet, or worn on the body for the interpretation of passers-by.

Expanding on the popular definitions established in this era, I developed my own language for exploring the intricate relationship between the mind and body. Each piece works to capture the physical sensations, or signals, the body uses to interpret what the mind is experiencing. The intention of my work is to provide a space for visitors to take a step back and view their feelings as nonexclusive, transitory states of being they are able to share with others. To quote a popular saying by Mark Nepo, “When we heal ourselves, we heal the world. For as the body is only as healthy as its individual cells, the world is only as healthy as its individual souls.”
